Which Battery To Choose?

We offer a range of battery options for our scooters. This can often be confusing as to which is the best battery option to go with. At first glance the Lithium upgrade options appear very expensive in relation to the more common Sealed Lead Acid (SLA- Pb) versions that have been used in these types of scooter for as long as they have existed.

However with a little investigation they are not as expensive over time as they first appear. Below we set out our findings from our experience with all types of batteries. The two types of batteries are Sealed Lead Acid, this is the most common type of scooter or electric motor driven vehicle battery, LiFePo4 (also known as Lithium Iron Phosphate) batteries are a huge improvement over lead acid in weight, capacity and shelf life. The LiFePO4 batteries are the safest type of Lithium batteries as they will not overheat, and even if punctured they will not catch on fire

So what is the difference? First, we need to look at the amp hour rating for the batteries, if you like this is the amount of energy they have to do work or move your scooter forward and for how long. The Lead-Acid option is 12 Ah and the LiFePo4 is 20Ah

The second consideration is loading cycles for the battery type, or how many time on average can the battery be recharged before it has to be replaced. For lead-acid this is approx. 250 loading cycles and for LiFePo4 it is approx. 1200 loading cycles. But what does this mean in terms that are easy to relate to? Taking the average distance the scooter can travel on a full charge and comparing it to the number of cycles the battery typically lasts:

So we can see that over a period of time the Lithium option is a far more efficient battery solution. But this is only part of the benefits as Lithium batteries are approx. 50% lighter than there Lead Acid counterparts so you will reduce the all-up weight of your scooter, which will make it light, accelerate faster and have a better top speed.
